Abstract*

Buona lettura!

Abstract

This text examines the connection between Football and Photography, focusing on the role of Panini Stickers. It reflects on the strategic role of photographic images and their power to connect with the present and the past. An iconic image of Bruno Bolchi, an Inter football player, featured in the historic edition of Panini Stickers, is described. The meaning of different framing techniques used in the stickers is explored, highlighting the discreet yet impactful support Photography offers to Football through these objects. Panini Stickers, with their imperceptible presence, contribute to reinforcing the collective myth of football, creating economic interdependencies and solidifying its global popularity. This analysis can pave the way for further reflections on the role of Photography in the context of Football.

Furthermore, a hypothetical “Narrative Path” is outlined through which the Photography of Panini Stickers contributes to the consolidation of Football as a dominant sport. Panini Stickers act as a meta-discursive tool, transforming a “game within the game” into a lasting support for Football mythology. The different phases of this narrative path are described, highlighting the role of stickers in conveying football values and combating potential opponents. The photography of Panini Stickers becomes a powerful support tool for Football, strengthening its dominant position through a complex network of interactions.

The text describes how, through the hypothetical “Narrative Path,” Panini Stickers and player Photographs contribute to the consolidation and promotion of Football as a dominant sport. Panini Stickers act as a meta-discursive support, transmitting values and fighting opponents by representing a magical object with defensive power. This narrative path creates a network of interactions that contributes to the perpetuation of Football as the main sport.

The role of Photography, particularly Panini Stickers, is reflected upon as a medium of communication and an object that requires cooperation for interpretation. It is emphasized that Photography, including that of Panini Stickers, is a complex medium that cannot “speak” on its own but needs an external ventriloquist, such as a caption or other media, to convey meaning. It is stated that Panini Stickers represent an emblematic example of this mediated communication process, with their abstract nature and the need for external sense extension. It is observed that without the import of external meaning, the stickers would remain silent and meaningless despite having stereotyped elements. Finally, it is emphasized that Photography, including that of Panini Stickers, always requires the importation of meaning from the outside to “function.”

The authenticating power of Photography and its ability to present the past “in the present” through the display of ghostly bodies are also highlighted. The concept of framing is introduced as a formal delimiter that protects the internal meaning of the image and controls the flow of meaning between the internal and external. Finally, reference is made to the illusory power of Photography and the paradoxical nature of visual representation.

In the subsequent part of the text, the symbolism of the circle and sphere as representations of the self and the totality of the human psyche, including the connection between humans and nature, is emphasized. The circle is a symbol that appears in various forms of human expression, from ancient solar cultures to astronomers, from Tibetan mandalas to modern religious forms. It represents the essential and global aspect of life. Additionally, football is described as a metaphor for life, with the referee recalling the role of a judge in assigning penalties and judgments. These penalties can be perceived as unjust or excessively severe, causing distress.

The text concludes by highlighting the strategic and irreplaceable role of Photography in the dynamic context of Football, as it allows for the synthesis of a complex competition into a summarizing image that can become an iconic symbol, narrating a series of events in a single impactful snapshot. An emblematic example of this is the image that summarized the victory of the Italian National Team in the 2006.

Enjoy the reading!

Piano americano” (o “PA”), nel quale il soggetto è ripreso dalle ginocchia in su;

“Piano medio” o “Mezza figura” (“PM” o “MF”), nei quali l’interessato è raffigurato dalla vita in su;

“Primo piano” (“PP”), nel caso in cui il volto del protagonista è inquadrato a partire dall’altezza delle spalle, come nel caso di una comune “fototessera”;

“Primissimo piano” (“PPP”), quando il volto della persona ritratta è di norma compreso tra il mento e un punto vicino o poco sopra l’innesto dei capelli; un’inquadratura “cinematografica” realizzata con lo scopo di provare a far emergere – quella che Nadar, pseudonimo del celebre fotografo Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (1820 – 1910) avrebbe forse definito come – “la somiglianza intima” o, in altri termini, l’anima del soggetto ritratto;

Immagini, come altre, in fondo, quelle contenute nelle Figurine Panini.

A questi primi, sommari riferimenti all’ambito semiotico-narrativo, aggiungo ora anche quello relativo, in particolare, all’Arte concettuale.

  • non siano paragonabili – come tutta la Fotografia, in fondo – a un object trouvée e, quindi, se anch’esse non siano verosimilmente “imparentate” con i più noti ready made di matrice duchampiana;
  • se i relativi album di figurine, non siano anch’essi dei testi (intesi come contenitori di senso e di valori) da considerare finanche delle vere e proprie installazioni;
  • se, conseguentemente, sia le immagini singole che quelle di gruppo non possano essere considerate come delle popolari forme di arte concettuale;

Football and Photography

The “superpower” of Panini stickers

_20220823_153656

Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

“If your photos aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.” R. Capa

The famous quote from Robert Capa that I quoted in the exergue, however singular this may possibly appear, I did not find it properly on the blog of a combative “black” journalist or a war reporter, but – incidentally – on a site web dedicated to the most popular and practiced sport in the world, namely Football.

A site dedicated to Women’s Football, to be exact.

Site I visited in relation to the interest arising from the appointment of a member of the technical team of the athletic trainers of our – not particularly exciting – National Women’s Soccer Team to a family member. A sporting branch, that of women’s football, which is gradually overcoming the niche sport phase, progressively freeing itself from the tedious as well as whipped cultural resistances of the past, not least that relating to the traditional male monopoly. A sector, therefore, in constant and continuous growth both as regards the sporting activity itself and as regards the relative reference network.

Including communication, last but not least, that conveyed through Photography.

And it was precisely a pre-existing “closeness” to a photographic image particularly representative for me and the search for greater proximity to what I will mention later, which, together with these first ideas, led me to make some reflections on certain possible relationships between football and photography. Polluted reflections, I state, also from personal memories, which, therefore, have no claim to scientificity nor, much less, to exhaustiveness. They are therefore not aimed at the whole world of “football”, but rather at a fraction that I still consider paradigmatic, although it is only a subsidiary component that rotates in the satellite orbit of the aforementioned major planet, namely Football.

An image, I said, like so many other similar ones, confused and dispersed in the immense inducement of a very popular and, in fact, global sport practice. And, going backwards in the memory in search of that first, emblematic image and rethinking the (not only its) possible connections between Photography and Football, the relative memory has finally re-emerged, gradually clearer.

_20220823_181652Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

Finding it online and rethinking the aforementioned theme of connections, I paused to reflect, first of all, on the strategic role of medium also assumed by this photographic image. A peculiar connection function – as it has always been for Photography as it is for any other image – characterized by the proposal to the viewer of a vision in the present that is always aimed at “the past”. A “was”, recalling the French semiologist Roland Barthes, unique and unrepeatable. For me, as for anyone else who was to (re) observe the same image, as well as any other representation. A connection, in any case, always “alive” and active, capable, now as then, of stimulating emotions and reactions, although, for reasons of age, my gaze and my interest are now obviously different from the time of the first ” contact ”with the image to which, in particular, I refer.

But what image am I talking about then?

It is an image that is part of the memorable series of “footballers” collected in the albums of the historic editions of the “Panini Stickers”, published and become famous since the early 1960s. I am referring, in particular, to the first of this (still) very successful edition.

A choice, I specify, which is not linked to reasons of supporters, since I am not, at the moment, a supporter of any football team.

_20220823_153656

Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

That said, the Panini figurine to which, specifically, I refer is the one that portrayed Bruno Bolchi – also known as “Maciste” for his physical prowess – wearing the historic Inter shirt, with vertical bands, in “black and blue “. A footballer, who later also became a coach, who played in the ranks of Inter for a long time (1954-1956 “Youth”, 1956-1963 “First team”), also becoming their captain for a period. During his militancy in the team he was also part of the historic formation led by the “Wizard” – Helenio Herrera – who, in 1963, led the Milanese team to win their eighth “Scudetto”. A success that, in fact, laid the foundations for the birth of what, since then, has been defined as the “Great Inter”.

Those were the years in which the protagonists immortalized in the famous Panini figurines were all rigorously portrayed in Half-length (“MB”), that is, portraying their face starting from the chest of the person concerned. That of the MB is one of the traditional ways of depicting the human figure, as it has been cataloged within the so-called Recovery “plan”. The noun plane – in Photography, as well as in Cinema, but not only – is therefore the term of reference normally used to indicate the width of the frame in relation to the ratio between the fraction of the chosen body shot and the whole figure portrait of the protagonist. In the case of the aforementioned Panini stickers, I would also add that, depending on the case, the types of plan usually chosen to make the shots of the athletes concerned have fluctuated over time from the aforementioned initial half bust – or “Half close-up” (“MPP”) – at the maximum framing considered, that is the one that includes the complete human figure (“Full figure” or “FI”). These two types of shots were usually preferred over the rest:

“Piano americano” (or “PA”), in which the subject is photographed from the knees up;

“Medium plan” or “Half figure” (“PM” or “MF”), in which the person concerned is depicted from the waist up;

“Close-up” (“PP”), in the case in which the face of the protagonist is framed from the height of the shoulders, as in the case of a common “passport photo”;

“Close-up” (“PPP”), when the face of the person portrayed is usually between the chin and a point near or just above the hair graft; a “cinematic” shot made with the aim of trying to bring out – what Nadar, pseudonym of the famous photographer Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (1820 – 1910) might have defined as – “intimate resemblance” or, in other words, the soul of the subject portrayed;

“Detail” (“Part.”) And “Detail” (“Detail”), in all those cases in which, with a very close shot, the shot is concentrated on a part of the face and / or a other part of the body of the person concerned, such as, for example, occurs during the television filming of any football match, when, to describe a particular action and / or a possible injury, the camera “squeezes” on the detail of the players’ bodies from time to time concerned.

Finally, for the sake of completeness, I would add that if the shot were, on the other hand, much wider than the “FI” – as in the case of the classic shot depicting an entire team of players – we could find ourselves facing a further level, with the possible passage from the said plan, in one of the variants just illustrated, to the so-called “Field” (shooting).

A grid of well-defined options, therefore, functional, first of all “to cover” that documentary dimension which, in the common imagination, is usually fulfilled by any snapshot.

“The” Photography tout court, according to a common feeling.

A particularly representative image, that of Bruno Bolchi, who immediately draws attention to the effectiveness of the support, even indirect, offered since the dawn (not only) from Photography to Football. A discreet support, in particular, that of the Panini stickers, as imperceptible as they are incisive, not least, thanks to its apparent invisibility. A “reinforcement”, which, with other media, Photography constantly contributes to nourish by strengthening that collective myth that has now universally become the game of Football. A growing, unstoppable myth that envelops and involves, unstoppable, the entire globe. A myth that systematically attracts always considerable audiences, thus creating economic interdependencies with mind-boggling numbers, which I gladly leave to other certainly more competent analysts.

An apparently immune myth and, not infrequently (with the exception of the Covid-19 pandemic), even “indifferent” and, therefore, unstoppable in the face of any other event, even of great significance and / or symbolic force that may eventually cross on the his way. Both internal (think, for example, of the periodic scandals related to the sale of athletes, betting, television rights, etc.) and external (remember, in particular, the attack on the Twin Towers and, last but not least, the recent conflict in progress right in the heart of our dear and now less and less “solid” and secure Old Europe).

_20220823_181652Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

But, leaving to others also the aspects concerning possible geopolitical issues and returning to Panini stickers, I will now try to outline briefly the narrative modalities through which in my opinion Photography, with and / or without other media, contributes to consolidate the daily mythology and evergreen of this popular planetary sport practice through the Panini stickers mentioned above.

Among these, referring to the well-known “Generative Path of Sense” at the time described by A. J. Greimas and J. Courtés, I now try to outline (albeit briefly and partially) a hypothetical “Narrative Path” (“PN”) through which Photography, in particular the one conveyed by the Panini stickers, would concretize its strategic, as decisive contribution to the consolidation of the supremacy of Football also feeding its relative mythology.

A contribution also of a meta-discursive type, that of the Panini stickers, capable of condensing and transforming – also through constant critical self-analysis – a sort of “game within the game” in the decisive and lasting form of support and “reinforcement” mentioned above. .

A resource perhaps not fundamental, that of Panini stickers, but, in my opinion, however, important, as mentioned, for its contribution, together with other media, in support of the constant primacy of the football myth. A synergistic cooperation which, strategically, also contributes at the same time to “prepare” potential future targets, stimulating and progressively nurturing their interest from early childhood. An interest spurred on through a playful practice – completely disinterested – apparently harmless which, precisely as such, does not normally find “resistance” both in the aforementioned potential targets and in the relative groups of peers, family and / or educational reference.

It does so within a PN articulated on several levels and also equipped with a real hierarchical system. In this multi-level scenario, the Panini stickers “translate” and bring from the bottom to the “surface” the relative system of values placed “at the base” of the narration. In this organizational structure, immediately above the underlying values, but always “below the surface” of formal appearances, we find the relative “actants”. The latter finally emerge “on the surface” and, coming “to the surface” finally take on a formal role. They are, in fact, “translated” into the relative formal figures, or, in the case of the famous Panini figurines, into the myriad of players depicted from time to time. Protagonists and, at the same time, testimonials of the revised original narrative. Therefore, they are the “real” actors, that is, those visible on the millions of Panini stickers printed every year. The mythical figurines that many of us have known, bought, exchanged and also collected for a long time, starting with number one, that is the one in which Bruno Bolchi has been portrayed many times.

And, by doing so, from the beginning, through these “prostheses” (affective, cultural, etc.), the heritage of meaning and values condensed “upstream” of each of the photographs depicting for decades is still supported and continuously enhanced. the players of the Panini stickers, supporting and promoting this sport incessantly “downstream” and consolidating its unshakeable leadership over time.

A silent “battle” against other possible adversaries, such as any other “minor” sport, which sees this economic, organizational, cultural, etc. colossus asymmetrically opposed. substantially to subjects that are usually increasingly weaker. An unequal dialectic (not only) between actants, which, conventionally, semiotic studies have condensed into the classic opposing figures of “Hero” and “Antihero”. As part of this highly unbalanced dialectical contrast, Photography – through the portrayed footballers – plays, however obvious, the role of the Hero, further supporting the cause of Football and, at the same time, “fighting”, even indirectly, the ‘Antihero on duty. For example, another sport competing to try to reposition itself better on the market, at least trying to undermine the traditional and stainless primacy of football. Hostile forces that are “incarnated” in other actants / actors, Antiheroes, or the enemy by definition.

The practical and operational transposition of this schematic theoretical system is embodied by the network of interrelationships animated by the Panini figurines that we have all more or less directly or indirectly experienced in first person. Myriads of micro-events, almost continuous, connected with the various transactions gradually carried out. An articulated main narrative network populated and animated by the many, minute secondary narratives fed by as many protagonists, young (but not only), extras of a market that is always very dynamic and lively, made up of countless: purchases, sales, exchanges, collections, etc.

_20220823_153656

Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

A vast network of interests, therefore, which has always revolved around the aforementioned Panini stickers. Figurines that semiotics can therefore, indisputably, configure as an authentic “object of value”. An Object of desire, however, not primary, if placed in relation, in this sort of “war” scenario, with the survival of the greater Planet, or rather of the Football System (as a whole). A sort of umbrella entity, which in this intricate network of relationships plays the role of a real “Principal / Receiver” by appointing the forward on duty, or, in our case, the Hero from Bruno Bolchi and all the other followers . Or rather, to be exact, from his ghost, from his reflection in “his” Photography (militant in the ranks of the Panini figurine army). An idol, however, in charge of giving his contribution to the end to complete the mission to which he is destined.

A multidimensional entity, that of Football, composed and animated, as I mentioned, by underlying values, actants and different formal actors, interrelated with each other by an equally varied network of relationships that are not always reciprocal and symmetrical. In a semiotic-narrative perspective, this internal chaos could represent a further and fearful adverse element. If not really “the” initial potential imbalance of a power system with hypertrophic features. This relational imbalance, rather than the repeated safeguarding of the primacy of football to the detriment of other sports, could therefore represent one of the possible “triggers” for the assignment of Hero to the army of football players-defenders that for decades, by the millions, ” look at us ”from the Panini stickers. An assignment aimed at dissolving or, at least, at containing, as far as possible and in a lasting way, both contingent threats, however fearful, and persistent and even more harmful ones for the Principal, or the renewed loss of the primacy of the most practiced sport in the world than everyone else.

. That Principal, who, as mentioned, therefore entrusts the role of Hero to the Attendant / Photograph “embodied” in the portraits contained in the Panini Stickers, so that he can defeat any possible antagonist Antihero.

Whoever it is.

Wherever it is.

And, in order for Photography – in the role of Operating Subject – to concretely succeed in its intent, the Principal first verifies the possession of what the generative grammar has defined as the skills suitable for carrying out the task. Then, if necessary, also equipping it with a “magic adjuvant”, that is a sort of “magic tool”. A magical tool that, even in the case of the Panini stickers, is condensed in the “gaze of Medusa” that each of the photographic images of the athletes portrayed anyway possesses. In other words, the magical tool supplied is, in reality, … the “paralyzing force” inherent in the Photography itself.

An image, therefore, a simulacrum of the “real”, nothing more than a spectrum equipped, however, with a sort of “superpower”.

A crucial defensive element, because the success of the assignment originally entrusted to him by the Principal could also depend on it.

Images, like others, after all, those contained in the Panini stickers. A representative example of the multiform, multidimensional, multifaceted, plural and, last but not least, multi-level and statute “body” of Photography.

A photograph that, from time to time, still depicts a now non-existent referent which, however, “rematerializes” itself, for the occasion, in a sort of miracle of the double.

A visual simulacrum, it has been said. An idol originally “exhaled” by the (s) object at the time of shooting. Using the words of the aforementioned French semiologist Roland Barthes, a sort of… “return of the dead” materializes in every photographic image. Through the transformation, the virtual embalming performed each time by Photography, we “experience” what the transalpine scholar has defined as “a micro-experience of death”. An interlude in the course of which the portrait effectively becomes a spectrum A parenthesis in the course of which the person portrayed is neither an object nor a subject, but rather a subject that is “evolving” into an object.

Object which, in the case in question, is represented by each of the aforementioned Panini Figurines.

The Photography, in this case of the Figurines in question, thanks to the mutation just mentioned, would therefore be an object (s) particularly suitable for the purpose. A multi-gifted operating subject and, therefore, in turn particularly insidious for the enemy front. A subject capable of proving to be very insidious, not least, precisely starting from its apparent immanent defect, which has always characterized it, that is, for its indeterminacy. Indeterminacy that distinguishes it in the reception phase, making it a sort of “wild sign” difficult to interpret every time, despite the deceptive apparent simplicity with which Photography has always presented itself. A wild sign, to be decoded and reinterpreted, in any case, with each new vision, even of the same image, drawing meaning and value, always and in any case, mainly from “outside”. An interpretative path, therefore, always different and, ultimately, “personalized” for each recipient. The “wild” nature – of this prototype of the major modern media – therefore triggers, with each new glance, an incessant, further resemantization of the “real”. A re-semantization that, in the case of football (but not only, of course), will necessarily be characterized by a reading as far as possible “folded” and functional to its mandate as original Principal. A role that Photography has always fulfilled and intermediate, distinguishing itself and retaining a leading role, albeit in a constant, as inescapable dialectical confrontation also with other, equally fierce media (I am thinking, in particular, of TV). A strategic role that, even today, it continues to defend even in its numerical version as it has long done, in the past, in its traditional analogue form. And, despite having faced and crossed such a particular and epochal technological ford, photography has always proved to be able to preserve its original communicative potential. Even strengthening them.

Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

Among the many possible, also in the light of what has been said so far, the Panini Figurines condense an emblematic and well-representative concrete example.

Among others, its constant characteristic as an omnipresent medium, whose most widespread method of use is not usually the “higher” one, perhaps connected to an authorial, cultic and auratic dimension, but rather the daily, much “lower” one, substantially mass, made up of visual fragments, visual fractions, reflective splinters, scattered everywhere in a practice of minute and interstitial consumption, global and by now, substantially, universal.

A perspective that, not surprisingly, also seems to correspond with the identikit of the Panini stickers. A profile that identifies them as potential avant-gardes of an interstitial communicative path to promote and support the design of the Principal / Recipient for the rooting of the myth of football from early childhood, with a whole series of references and subsequent “reinforcements” that – in synergy with other factors and other media – contribute to the consolidation in the collective imagination of the renewed primacy of football over other sports disciplines. A particularly incisive and effective avant-garde in its action, because, like a “Trojan Horse”, it has already “broken” any (scarce) defenses of the recipient concerned for some time, “reinforcing” solid bases of interest for this sport. For example, by disseminating in the target concerned some “spores” which, upon the occurrence of certain future favorable circumstances, could automatically reactivate by renewing, perhaps even increasingly, any interest in the recipients for this sport branch, but not only. A sort of gratifying compulsion to repeat, as specific sector studies have repeatedly shown us.

Having said that, I would like to point out that, however obvious, this summary and simplifying excursus of mine, at times even mechanistic and deterministic, is by no means intended to exclude a whole series of other factors – cultural, environmental, technological, etc. – that, in a very different way from time to time, could “act” on the interested party, with results that, even in apparently similar cases, could lead to even diametrically opposite results.

To these first, summary references to the semiotic-narrative field, I now also add that relating, in particular, to Conceptual Art.

A dimension that seems to me to be traceable also in the mythical Panini stickers which are the subject of this text. In fact, like any other image, even the Panini stickers, whether individual athletes or entire formations are portrayed, are configured, in any case, as forms of abstraction.

Otherwise said, as a kind of conceptual works.

_20220823_164303

Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

Abstractions, therefore, “bizarre” media, as the aforementioned French critic R. Barthes would define them, which circulate “messages without code”, showing an “intractable” reality. However, their oddity does not allow them to “speak” without the help of a “ventriloquist”, that is, without an “external voice”. Another medium, then. Such as, for example, an apparently harmless and neutral explanatory caption. An absurd condition, of silence, which only a ventriloquist who “speaks” instead of the photographic image – importing a sense of norm from the outside and pasting it “inside” the image – then allows it to “speak”. And, in doing so, perhaps reveal useful references about individuals, rather than the groups possibly depicted in an image. Which: the team they belong to, their career path, the teams involved, their history, etc.

The whole of Photography – including that conveyed by the Panini Figurine – is therefore a complex and articulated apparatus (not only technical) which, like the human body, exists and functions, only thanks to – and through – other “bodies-organs”, or rather by means of of other media.

Normally “internal” organs, in the case of the human body.

Normally “external” organs, or other media not contained “inside” the image, however, in the case of Photography.

Exogenous elements of meaning, which contribute from the outside to “give a shape” and a “voice” to each photographic image. An image that lives, therefore, precisely through the intermediation of ventriloquy borrowed from other media.

And there is no alternative for any type of image, including Panini stickers, to get out of their congenital muteness, other than to resort, as mentioned, to the “external” help of other media. In the “glass house” of Photography, “inside” every image, in essence, there is usually nothing, if you don’t care about the sense from the outside. All or almost that sense, the narrative, the values, etc., usually arrive from somewhere else, placed outside the image. An elsewhere, an “outside”, which, as a rule, is therefore technically extraneous to the image. And the Panini stickers, as I said, are obviously no exception. Indeed, they are just a confirmation and an emblematic representation.

Through the apparently transparent “walls” of any photograph we believe, in fact, to “look inside” the image.

But, in reality, what we observe is not the inside but what, from the outside, is reflected inside. Otherwise said, even the “body” of any Panini Figurine, like any other image, is a mute body, without a word and without a predefined meaning.

Since “birth”!

And he can “speak”, as mentioned, not with his own “voice”, but only by means of an external signifying prosthesis transfused into the image by a third context, extraneous to the image and placed, as mentioned, “outside “From the photograph.

To be rigorous, perhaps, at least partially, the Panini stickers could possibly represent a partial exception, characterized, as they always seem to be, by strongly stereotyped elements of shape, starting from the pose, the uniforms worn, the presence of other symbols ( such as: effigies, badges, etc.).

However, in the absence of external help, without an external decodable sense “glued” inside the photographic image each time concerned – however stereotyped this meaning imported “inside” may be – even this type of images (even real cliché) would remain, in any case, substantially mute. Without this external help, we would not know, for example, when, where and why a certain image was ever made. But not only that, we could not even give a name to any (s) objects portrayed inside it.

We could therefore not give – like a coroner engaged in the post mortem examination of a body – no data even regarding the possible “causes” of the event represented in the image, nor, even less, of the still anonymous bodies depicted “inside” the image itself.

Photography, therefore, only after being adequately supplied with meaning imported from the outside, does it become what we all know, that is, a tool and a communication channel capable of finally giving “voice” to the (s) objects present inside it. Otherwise all still united, without the aforementioned “external assistance”, by an original “consignment of silence”. A “delivery” which, of course, do not even escape strongly stereotyped images, such as the Panini stickers.

And in the face of so much silence, in the face of such a “deafening” silence it is consequently not possible to understand in front of whom and / or what kind of representation you are.

On the contrary, with the symbolic support of other media – both written texts (such as, for example: notes, explanatory legends, etc.) and unwritten texts (other images, audiovisual testimonies, oral descriptions, etc.) – any an attempt to “read” the image, first condemned to an uncertain if not even a failure, then takes on a more or less defined connotation of meaning and, in any case, very different from the previous silence.

We are faced with an image that is finally “talking” because it is no longer meaningless. It therefore becomes possible to make a possible circumstantial reconstruction, a sort of “autopsy” more reliable than the “corpse” being observed. In this way, one can “give voice”, for example, also: to the physical places depicted, to the sense of the postures of the various extras, to the general mood of a documented event and, last but not least, to the protagonists themselves portrayed. Among these “aids”, just think, as already mentioned. in particular the expressive power, the semantic impact force, usually unnoticed, of a small and apparently simple caption. A text that is highly strategic due to its crucial relay function, orientation and semantic anchoring of interpretation within more or less defined boundaries.

Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

Finally, one could perhaps ask, having reached this point, while running the risk of fueling some suspicion due to a sort of excess of relativism, if the Panini stickers:

  • they are not comparable – like all Photography, after all – to an object trouvée and, therefore, if they too are not likely “related” to the best known ready-mades of Duchampian matrix;
  • if the related sticker albums are not also texts (intended as containers of meaning and values) to be considered even as real installations;
  • if, consequently, both single and group images cannot be considered as popular forms of conceptual art;
  • if the caption (even the unwritten one), as a strategic channel for the transfer of meaning, is not to be considered the true “voice” of the image (think, in this regard, what can evoke even just an apparently simple and linear statement which “this is … Bruno Bolchi” pronounced by observing, for example, the relative Panini Figurine depicting the person concerned. It, in fact, is a multi-dimensional text (layout, coloring, writing, etc.) which contains a first referential indication but, at the same time, it also presupposes a substantial dose of abstraction – necessary for a more correct identification of what and who is portrayed in it – towards something, information and / or symbols that are once again usually placed at the outside the image.

The Panini stickers are therefore also emblematic as they are transversal surrogates produced by Photography. Alternates of as many bodies that with Photography generally understood, have a strategic element in common, namely: the frame.

A further significant body, a formal delimiter of the “political” perimeter of interest, even when it is not clearly delineated, is indefinite and little or not at all tangible. The frame substantially embodies the grid, the boundary wall – the real or imaginary boundaries – placed to guard, control and defend the content of meaning within the image. It is the realm of liminality, a sort of “guarded” frontier where every transit of meaning between the outside and the inside of the image is controlled and vice versa. An opening, a liminal limbo and, at the same time, a bridge between two or more dimensions of meaning and the dialectical relationship between the interior of the image with what is and conveys meaning and values outside of it. An ineluctable, incessant, uninterrupted dialectic and opposition and, in any case, strategic to ensure the intangibility of the acquired sense of time.

_20220823_153656

Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

At least “until further notice”, as, for example, in the case of any partial or total resemantization of the meaning contained in the image concerned, including the Panini stickers.

A strategic interrelation, therefore, because, without it, the inside of the image could have neither “certain” sense, just as, on the contrary, the outside could not, for example, confirm and consolidate its significant dimension. . A sense that is nourished, enriched and mutually consolidated, thanks to the relationship between what appears to be “inside” and what is “outside”. A dialectical comparison between different elements, divided by that limen, that border usually represented, as I mentioned earlier, by the frame. Different dimensions, in any case always interrelated, albeit with gradients, contents, values and in a synergic relationship from time to time possibly also variable, which, in any case, help to define the relative difference in meaning, the hierarchical and functional relationship, etc. between what, I stress, is “inside” and what is “outside”. In theory, this is the content of meaning that preserves and defends a frame within its boundaries, in its perimeter – formal or, at times, even only imaginary and / or hypothetical.

The Panini stickers, like any other image, I repeat, are obviously no exception.

Just as, also for Panini Stickers, the general reflection, also by R. Barthes, applies, which highlights how one of the distinctive characteristics of Photography is its power of authentication. A power of authentication that subordinates that of representation. Representation through which Photography “records” the visual essence of the world in its own way. A visual essence that, although deferred in time, goes beyond the mere reproduction of reality, going further. A going beyond that re-proposes the past by even presenting it “to the present”. From this perspective, Photography becomes a kind of ghost factory, continuously producing only a sort of ghostly bodies.

Phantom bodies paradoxically immersed in an eternal fictitious present.

A hypothetical present, therefore, as immutable and without a future, of which Photography constantly shows us the “corpse” of the body of its original referent.

Through this ostension in the “funeral home” symbolized in each image, the Photography feeds the emergence of an alienating dimension, where the “real” is always absent. A “real” disappeared and replaced only by visual simulacra. A kind of perceptive madness, a real visual hallucination that – through this “crazy” medium we call Photography – offers the gaze “bodies” that have vanished, virtually reified and made present … “to the past”.

_20220823_181652Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

It follows, as R. Barthes summed up again, that:

“Photography then becomes […] a bizarre medium, a new form of hallucination: false at the level of perception, true at the level of time.”

Furthermore, every image is by its nature always a paradoxical second-degree representation which, at best, can lead to presuppose – without being able to guarantee it with absolute certainty – a possible relationship with an equally possible original referent, a possible concrete source, “real”.

A connection, a hypothetical relationship, therefore, between a before and an after, between an original and a probable copy of it, which inevitably leads to a paradox. A paradoxicality generated by the coexistence in the image-copy, as emblematically occurs in all Photography, of an object (s) that is however other, different from the original, albeit in the apparently indestructible bond of likelihood with the original analogue. An absurdity inherent in every image – including Panini stickers, of course – precisely because of the amalgamation in each of them of another image, different and in any case also temporally more or less distant, of its apparent original (s)object.

The widespread idea of truth as a presumed faithful resemblance between a representation and its referent, perhaps in no area is so pregnant and insistent as in the world of images.

In Photography, considered “the” true and stainless “duplicate” of reality, it then seems to echo even more evidently because it offers absolutely no definitive answer that gives absolute certainty. This indeterminacy is obviously further amplified in the case of images that have the possible added “misfortune” of not faithfully reproducing the appearances of their original referent. Moreover, if this were the case, or if the image were an exact copy of its original, there would be no “gap” between the copy and the original and there would no longer be any difference between them.

Once again, this constraint also applies to Panini stickers.

Panini stickers, which, like other “satellites” orbiting in the football solar system, incessantly gravitate around that immense “attractive body” that once was, is and will remain the ball.

An object that, beyond its material and formal characteristics, is, at the same time, also an element full of symbolic values, in particular for its natural reference to the geometric figures of the circle and the sphere.

As an object, the geometric figure of reference – approximating that of the sphere – is that of the truncated icosahedron, the regular polyhedron that has the largest number of faces. It is a semi-regular solid, composed of pentagons and hexagons sewn and / or joined together, which has a total of 32 faces: 12 of which pentagonal, usually colored black, and the other 20 hexagonal faces, generally colored by white. A model that had already occurred to Archimedes, who, in the third century BC, indicated the existence of 13 semi-regular solids, which were consequently defined: “Archimedes”.

On a symbolic level, the circle and / or sphere have always also been a symbol of the self. More specifically, they refer to the totality of the psyche in all its aspects, understanding, in this perspective, the relationship between the human being and Nature, understood as a whole. Consequently, the symbol of the circle, which manifested itself in primitive cults dedicated to the cult of the Sun, rather than in the reflections of the first astronomers, in a Tibetan mandala, as well as in the “religious” forms of modernity – with the possible application of its forms in metropolitan urban planning, rather than in the furnishing of a place of worship, as in the case of the so-called “Rosettes” – has always evoked the essential aspect of life, its overall globality.

Football has also always been a popular metaphor for life or vice versa.

To give just one example, I would suggest thinking, in particular, of the referee. A role that, even going beyond the metaphorical dimension, still refers to that of the judge in the attribution of any sanctions and / or convictions: free kicks and / or penalties, warnings, expulsions, etc. Sanctions, which, due to the possible outcomes, can sometimes be as indigestible not only for the possible damage that they may cause “downstream” immediately, but also be particularly hateful, as in the case in which they may be considered excessively severe, disproportionate , if not, even incorrect and / or “deliberate”, etc.

Anonimo, s.t., s.d.

But, returning one last time to the relationship between football and photography, I conclude by recalling that, despite the uninterrupted deluge of visual output that overwhelms us every day, the latter proves, once again, to be strategic and, in fact, irreplaceable. In particular, in complex and dynamic contexts such as that of football, with all its dense network of events, “weekly analyzes” of news, etc. The “physiological” and essential need to synthesize a complex competition in a single – perhaps historical – summary image makes, in fact, Photography an unparalleled tool in terms of effectiveness and incisiveness.

The single frame can therefore become a sort of icon-symbol, capable of condensing the narration of an entire series of events into a single, emblematic summary “shot”. Just think, to give a very last example among the many possible, to the freeze-frame that “summarized” the outcome of the last Soccer World Cup of the Italian national team, with the victory “on penalties” (5-3) against France, at the end of the match, which took place in Berlin on 9 July 2006 and previously ended in a draw (1-1).
